Letter: Is it time to redress past homosexual grievances?
Personally, I do not approve of same-sex marriage. However, now that gay marriage is law in Minnesota, indicating that a majority of Minnesotans believe the gay lifestyle deserves all the legitimacy, respect and approval of the heterosexual lifestyle, what remains to be done?

Letter: Legislators should vote ‘Yes’ for gay marriage
The state legislature will soon vote on a bill that would expand the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples. We hope our legislators will vote yes. We’ve been married for over 53 years. In that time together we have walked with one another through the ups and downs of life.

Letter: Come audition for Annie!
Certain experiences are game changers. Your life was going in one direction; suddenly it is going in another. Sometimes these experiences are thrust upon us and we get no choice. Other times, we have an opportunity presented to us that we should not let slip by.

Letter: Klobuchar and Franken should not support legal status for illegal immigrants
It is truly shameful that our Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken are supporting legal status for criminal Mexican illegals. At a time when unemployment among American teenagers is near a record high of 25 percent, extra income is badly needed at many Minnesota households. There are a variety of jobs that should be filled by unemployed teens, not Mexican illegals.

Book Report: Stolen library book opened his eyes
“Who’s Yer Daddy?” edited by Jim Elledge and David Groff (University of Wisconsin Press, $26.95) is a fascinating look at writers and artists who inspired the work of gay writers and artists by the gay writers and artists themselves.

Book Report: Another word on former presidents; waxing poetic on the death of a fly
Three American presidents lead off this week’s roster of books: Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. You could fill libraries with what has already been written by these guys, but leave it to the scholars — they can always find a niche that’s unfilled.

Book Report: A new Scandinavian thriller takes the stage
I’m way behind in my coverage of the Scandinavian thriller surge in world publishing, not having even read a Stieg Larsson thriller, so I’ll try to make it up by reviewing a finely wrought thriller by first-time Swedish author Alexander Soderberg. It’s “The Andalucian Friend,” (Crown, $26), translated by Neil Smith.

Letter: Residents are responsible for their own vehicles
As citizens we have a duty to our fellow neighbors. This is where the term civic duty originates. While I may personally feel bad that certain citizens’ vehicles may have been lawfully ticketed and towed based on them not knowing about a snow emergency, even the one interviewed for the recent story realized there was a chance of a snow storm.

Letter: Go see Black Dirt Theater’s ‘Resurrection’
I had the opportunity to attend Black Dirt Theater’s production of The Sound of Music” last summer. Up until that time, I thought of community theater as a chance for amateurs to have some fun on the stage, resulting in performances high on enthusiasm but low in quality.

Book Report: Son carries on, expands war narrative
As the River Falls Reads program winds down and folks who have read and enjoyed Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer-Prize winning novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, “The Killer Angels,” are looking for new reading material, I’m happy to report that although Shaara died in 1988, his family lives on in the person of his son, Jeff Shaara, who also writes about the Civil War and has completed his father’s trilogy with “Gods and Generals” and “The Last Full Measure.”
