Gaylord Augustine, 92

Gaylord Augustine passed away Friday, Aug. 24, at Augustana Health Care Center of Hastings.

He was born in Lake City, Minn., on Oct. 13, 1919, to Henry and Emma (Buhman) Augustine.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilee. He is also survived by one brother, Grover of Williston, N.D., along with nephews and a niece and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Betty and Ruby.

Gaylord began life working on a farm south of Lake City. During his adolescent years, because of the influence of his parents, Gaylord gained a real appreciation for God's Word, the Bible, reading it regularly and treasuring the opportunity to talk to others about it. He began to see that Bible prophecy pointed to relief from the present world of pain, suffering, crime, violence. This would not be accomplished by any human means but rather by means of God's Kingdom, which he regularly prayed for in the Lord's Prayer.

He decided to begin a life of full-time ministry that took him to New Mexico in the 1950s where he then learned Spanish. In 1964, he married Marilee Heaser, herself a missionary who had spent time in Venezuela but was now sharing God's Word with Spanish-speaking people in Las Cruces, N.M. This began a life together that found the two of them traveling all over the United States visiting congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses to help strengthen and encourage the faithful in these critical times. Eventually, with failing health in his late 80s, he and Marilee came back to Minnesota to live with relatives in Hastings.

A memorial service will be held for Gaylord at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 18205 Lillehei Ave. (Hwy 61.)

Gaylord's family would especially like to thank the administration and staff of Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings. Their tireless and unselfish attention to Gaylord's needs made his stay as pleasant as it could be. He also loved the food. Thank you.
