Bernard "Ben" Rimpila, age 87, of Hastings, Minn., died July 29 at the Regina Medical Center.

Bernard was born Aug. 16, 1924, in New York Mills, Minn., to Fabian and Lena (Ehnert) Rimpila. He was a graduate of New York Mills High School. Ben served in the Army Infantry and as an MP at the Nuremberg Trials. He drove General Patton. Ben married Peg Petersen Sept. 10, 1944, in Sebeka, Minn. He was a service manager at New York Mills, Freed Chevrolet, and O'Brien Chevrolet of Hastings from 1957-1990, when he retired.

Ben was active in his church and was a community volunteer. He loved woodworking and was a VFW member.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Gary and Ron.

He is survived by his wife, Peg; daughter, Gloria Springer of Fergus Falls; son Lucky (Connie) Rimpila of Northfield; daughters-in-law Helen Rimpila of Lonsdale and Patti Rimpila of Hastings; also 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Roberts of Anchorage, Alaska; and brother, Kenneth Rimpila of New York Mills.

The memorial service, officiated by Rev. Doug Duin, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Our Saviour's Ev. Lutheran Church, 400 W. Ninth St., Hastings. Interment, with military honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210, will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings. Honorary pallbearers are his ten grandchildren. Memorials are preferred.
