Mercedes Ruth Schmitz, age 89, of Hastings, passed away at Regina Assisted Living on April 1.
Mercedes Ruth Schmitz, age 89, of Hastings, passed away at Regina Assisted Living on April 1.
She was born in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 10, 1922, to Jeremiah and Mary Black. She married Jerome Schmitz on June 15, 1946, in Chicago. She was a loving mother and grandmother who had a lifelong appreciation and love of antiques.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Edward; grandson Jeffrey Riordan; her parents, and sisters Marcena, Jean, and Mary.
She is survived by her children, Jerome II "J" (Annie) Schmitz, Pat (Charlie) Swanson, Sue (Kevin) Riordan, Charity Angle, and Faith (Joe) Bratton; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jeremiah, Bob, and Byron; sister Dorsey Shiplov; and many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Regina Memorial Chapel, 1175 Nininger Rd., Hastings. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to mass. Interment in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials preferred to Allina Hospice.
