Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Gergen, age 84, of rural Hastings, died unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Betty was born June 7, 1927, in St. Paul, to Clem and Anna (Kunza) Schabert. She married Sylvester Gergen Nov. 10, 1956, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in South St. Paul. They lived and farmed south of Hastings. Betty was a retired longtime employee at Smead Manufacturing of Hastings.
Sylvester died on Feb. 28, 2006. Besides her parents and her husband, Sylvester, Betty was preceded in death by her twin brother, Will Schabert and his wife, Lil, as well as a sister-in-law, Bev Schabert.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Barbara (David) Meyers of Hastings, Susan (Dennis) Beissel of Hampton; six grandchildren Kelly (Jeff) Niederkorn, Andy (Kristy) Meyers, Danny (Kaidy Sirinek) Meyers, Angela Beissel, Nicholas (Stacey) Beissel, and Matthew (Jessica) Beissel. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Lukas Niederkorn, Charlie Meyers, Jacob Beissel, and Maddison Beissel; also by a sister, Lorraine (Frank) Lothenbach; a brother, Allen Schabert; sisters-in-law Helen Gergen, Clarice Gergen, and Sylvia Gergen.
Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, and on Thursday 1 hour prior to the funeral. Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr. Stan Mader, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Trier, Minn. Her six grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
