Jeanette "Jan" Black, age 91, of Hastings, died Jan. 30 at her home.

Jeanette "Jan" Black, age 91, of Hastings, died Jan. 30 at her home.

Jan was born April 22, 1920, in Hampton, to Fred and Bertha (Betzold) Duff. She was a graduate of Farmington High School and married Charles E. Black in Hastings on March 25, 1939. She was a former employee of 3M and had worked with her husband in Black's Meat Processing Plant in Hastings.

After their retirement, Jan and her husband, Charlie, enjoyed traveling with friends, making trips to Florida, Texas, California, and anywhere else they had family or friends. They also enjoyed traveling to their kids' and grandkids' sporting events, games, and activities. Jan especially enjoyed dancing, going to craft fairs, visiting with family and friends…she was very social. Friday night was an automatic dinner date with her many friends.

As the years went on, Jan became more active. She enjoyed walking, exercising, and always loved to bowl. She took up golf later in life and enjoyed both bowling and golfing into her late 80s. Jan enjoyed going to watch her grandchildren and talented young people of Hastings and took in many choir concerts and plays throughout the years. Jan volunteered and enjoyed spending time with friends at the Hastings Sr. Center.

Jan kept sharp by working on crossword puzzles and regular card playing with 2-3 different card clubs. You always wanted Jan as your partner. She also enjoyed her regular soap operas and “Dancing with the Stars.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter Alice Elverum; and nine siblings. Jan is survived by her children, GayNelle (Leo) Holzmer of Rogers, Ark., Beth (Bernie) Werner of Hastings, and Steve (Linda) Black of Hastings; also 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral service, officiated by Rev. John Mitchem, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the United Methodist Church, 615 W. 15th St., Hastings, followed by interment in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. 7th St., Hastings, and 1 hour prior to the service at church. The pallbearers are Mark Holzmer, Scott Holzmer, Joe Wagner, Jim Wagner, Tom Wagner, Jeff Werner, Brian Werner, and Charlie Black; honorary pallbearers are Dawne Robinson, Denise Davis, Shari Byrd, Lisa Kieffer, and Sara Black.

Arrangements were handled by the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, 651-437-9419, www.caturia-smidtfh.com.
