Sixth-grade Math Masters take first

The sixth-grade Math Masters teams of Hastings Middle School on March 8 competed against 34 other teams from the Twin Cities in Lakeville. One of the teams took first-place honors.

The sixth-grade Math Masters teams of Hastings Middle School on March 8 competed against 34 other teams from the Twin Cities in Lakeville. One of the teams took first-place honors.

A total of 170 sixth-graders participated in the competition. The competition included a fact drill round, individual rounds and team rounds.

The team of Jack Beissel, Austin DeBoom, Brian Nielsen, Evan Rumann and James Scharr took home the first-place plaque for the entire competition. Taking sixth place were Drew Davis, Claudia Ketcham, Will Lavin, Jordan Peterson and Deanna Small with alternate Megan Hill. Placing 15th were Nolan Conzemius, Charisma Denning, Isaac Flynn, Allana Kielas and Zach Nelson with alternate Joe Carlson.

Many of the students also received individual awards. Brian Nielsen placed third overall (out of 170 students) and received a ribbon for placing in the top 20 of the fast fact round. Jack Beissel placed 12th, Austin DeBoom placed 17th, Claudia Ketcham placed 18th, Isaac Flynn placed 19th and received a ribbon for placing in the fast fact round and Evan Rumann placed 20th.

The teams were coached by Ellie Lundstrom and Linda Bindman.
