Hastings High School senior Sara Wright has a unique passion – rugby – and it’s something she’s gaining statewide attention for.
Wright is part of the Minnesota Select high school rugby team, which features the top 21 players from Minnesota.
The team traveled to Las Vegas in February to compete at an international meet, the Las Vegas Invitational. It wasn’t Wright’s first trip out of the state to compete in rugby. Last summer she went to Indiana to play, and this summer she’ll compete in Pennsylvania.
“It’s an aggressive sport, and most girls don’t get to play that kind of sport,” she said. “I just like it – I like going out and tackling people. Just everything about it, really. It’s such a great team to be on. There’s no politics. It’s just fun, and its different than the stuff the other girls do.”
Wright hopes to attend a college this fall that has a good club program. Winona State and Minnesota State, Mankato are two schools with club programs, and she is considering both.
Rugby is growing quickly across the United States and was recently added to the Olympics.
Hastings even has its own girls team, the Hastings Heat, of which Wright is a member.
