The Hastings boys wrestling team wrestled its best two matches of the season on Saturday, and because of that, the team came within just a few points of qualifying for the state meet.
In the section finals, Hastings lost to No. 1 seeded Owatonna, 31-28.
Hastings had advanced to the finals by beating No. 2 seeded Albert Lea, 32-28.
Hastings was the section’s No. 3 seed.
The loss ends the team season for Hastings. Individuals from Hastings will be competing this weekend for a chance to qualify for the state tournament.
In the championship match against Owatonna, the Huskies won the first four matches of the meet, building a 16-0 lead.
Luke Rowh got Hastings on the scoreboard with a win by major decision, 11-3.
Hastings won three matches in a row between 145 and 160, with Jake Anderson, Stuart Mattison and Dan Marquette winning to make the score 19-16.
Andy Rachuy scored a huge pin at 182 pounds to tie the score 22-22. His pin came just 50 seconds into the match.
Tony Lodermeier won by fall at 3:10 to give Hastings a 28-25 lead.
Owatonna’s heavyweight, though, is ranked No. 5 in the state and scored a win by fall to give the Huskies the 31-28 victory.
Vs Albert Lea
Hastings upset Albert Lea in the section semifinals, 32-28.
Spencer Kopp got things off to a good start for Hastings with a win at 106 pounds.
Hastings lost three straight matches, but then Rowh got the Raiders moving in the right direction with a technical fall, 24-11, at 132 pounds.
Austin Eichmann won at 138 pounds in overtime, 6-4, making the score 16-10 in favor of Albert Lea.
After a loss at 145, Mattison won (15-5) and Marquette won (6-2) to make the score 19-17, still in the opposition’s favor.
Hastings then fell behind 28-17 before they rallied to win the meet’s final three matches to win.
Rachuy earned a pin at 1:22 to make the score 28-23.
Daryale Harris earned a pin at 51 seconds to give Hastings a lead at 29-28.
Tony Lodermeier won by decision at heavyweight, 6-3, to seal the win.
The section tournament began Thursday with a solid 44-21 win over Rochester John Marshall.
Kopp won at 106.
Luis Sanchez won at 120 by fall.
Rowh won at 132 pounds, earning a pin.
Anderson won at 145 and Mattison won at 152.
After the match at 170 pounds, Hastings led by just one point, 22-21.
Rachuy, Harris, Lodermeier and Josh Kickbush each won their matches down the stretch to give the Raiders the win.
Harris, Lodermeier and Kickbush each earned pins.
