It sure didn’t take long for the Hastings boys swimming and diving team to prove it was the top team in Thursday’s meet against White Bear Lake.
Hastings jumped out to a 37-9 lead after three events and cruised to a 93-85 win over the Bears. It was the SEC dual meet opener for both teams.
The swimmer of the meet for Hastings was Jack Weldon.
“He swam really well,” coach Gerry Rupp said. “He had an awesome 100 butterfly time.”
In the butterfly, Weldon placed first with a time of 1:00.73.
Diver Vova Tipler, in his first varsity meet, placed second in diving. He is a seventh grader and finished with 146.25 points.
Cole Tipler, Stephen Smith and Jack VanZee all had especially strong nights in the pool, Rupp said.
“They are really coming out of the gate hard,” he said.
Hastings plays host to Mounds View tonight (Thursday). The Mustangs will prove to be a much more formidable foe than the Bears were. The Mustangs have the state’s top distance freestyle swimmer.
“They’re going to be a tough, tough meet for us,” Rupp said. “Our freestylers match up really well with their freestylers. The sprint relay and the 400 freestyle relays will be barnburners.”
