Hastings’ Director of Parks and Recreation Barry Bernstein recently announced his resignation.

The Hastings City Council recognized Bernstein Monday evening for his work in Hastings by reading a proclamation.

Bernstein has been the Director of Parks and Recreation since July, 2004. The council noted his enthusiasm, dedication, compassion and support for Hastings parks and recreation amenities; several achievements in which he played an instrumental role; and his work as an ambassador for the parks and recreation programs.

Bernstein struggled at the meeting to respond to the proclamation.

“It’s not often I’m at a loss for words,” he said.

“It’s been truly an honor to serve the residents, serve the council.”

Bernstein’s resignation goes into effect Dec. 14. He has accepted a position as director of parks and recreation for the City of Apple Valley.

The Parks and Recreation Committee meets Dec. 6 to start the process of filling the vacancy.
