Raiders beat Farmington, 5-3, to start with 2-0 record

The Hastings girls hockey team improved to 2-0 on the season last week with a 5-3 win over Farmington.

Hastings built a big 5-0 lead through the two periods. Farmington scored the game’s final three goals.

“We had many more chances but did not finish on some power play opportunities and other scoring chances,” coach Jeff Corkish said. “The coaches were very excited to see some kids do some things in the game that stemmed from them having good practices earlier, but we were also a little frustrated with the lack of killer instinct at the end of the game. We have to learn how to finish games and play a full 51 minutes, but overall we are happy to start the season 2-0 as well as seeing us starting to get better at different areas of the game.”

Kiki Radke had two goals for Hastings.

“The line of Natalie Simons, Kiki and Sam Claussen started to click a little more with give and goes, quick feet, short passes and good communication, all leading to some good scoring chances and Kiki getting her 4th and 5th goals of the season,” Corkish said.

Corkish also praised the work of Anna Williams.

“Anna showed a lot of energy in the game, talking more and making some really nice passes with her head up and seeing the open lanes,” he said. “Anna had a tough year last season dealing with injuries but worked very hard in the offseason to get ready this year so she should be very proud of herself and her persistence. She is going to be a very good hockey player as long as she continues to work hard away from the rink and do the little things like shooting and stick handling at home.

“We are blessed with a great group of girls who want to work hard, push each other and go the extra mile to get better. Makes it very fun for the coaches to go to the rink every day when you have kids like Anna.”

Brooke Weber played in goal.

Hastings plays host to Burnsville on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 7:30 p.m.

Hastings stays in action next week with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Stillwater. It is the conference opener for Hastings.

Vs Shakopee

Hastings played against Shakopee on Nov. 16 and settled for a 2-2 tie.

Hastings fell behind 2-0 in the second period, but pulled closer with a goal by Claussen, assisted by Williams and Jackie Stark at 12:22 in the second period.

Hastings tied the score 2-2 with a goal in the third period. That goal was scored by Simons, assisted by Radke and Claussen.

Brooke Weber played in goal. She made 25 saves on 27 shots.
