Letter: An open letter to Hastings youths

As parents, our hearts ache with the recent loss of such young, vibrant souls in our community. While I’m not an expert on depression or a professional counselor, I have some thoughts on life I’d like to share with you.

An open letter to the young people of Hastings:

As parents, our hearts ache with the recent loss of such young, vibrant souls in our community. While I’m not an expert on depression or a professional counselor, I have some thoughts on life I’d like to share with you:

Remember, your life has purpose. Our life on earth was given to us by God for a reason. We can choose to use it in many different and positive ways. He meant for us to be kind to one another, to help those in need, to make the world a better place, and to make tomorrow a better day than today. Our days on earth are a precious gift and should be valued and treasured, and used as God intended.

God does not want us to take life, but to create and enrich it. When we feel depressed or it appears there is no way to solve life’s problems, seek out those who know and love you for advice to get through it. Yes, they are out there: you have only to ask. They can be friends, parents, teachers, counselors, pastors, and others. Many will stand by you in those troubled times, provide a supportive hug and help to carry the load.

Speaking from experience (yes, I’m probably what you consider to be “old”), I can tell you definitively, it will get better. It always does, no matter how dark it may seem today. I have seen it happen many, many times. Human kind always finds a way to prevail in the end, making good triumph over evil, and creating a better world for all. You are an important part of the future and your contributions are only beginning. We need you here.
