Letter: Blame it on the elimination of hats

Many can recite a litany of factors which have led to our current culture of broken families and out of wedlock births. They list the pill, no-fault divorce, pornography and safe sex education as factors, and believe that same sex marriage would be one more step on the road to cultural ruin.

To the editor,

Many can recite a litany of factors which have led to our current culture of broken families and out of wedlock births. They list the pill, no-fault divorce, pornography and safe sex education as factors, and believe that same sex marriage would be one more step on the road to cultural ruin.

They leave out one cultural change as damaging as any — the elimination of women’s hats. When Jackie Kennedy became first lady in 1961 with that bouffant hairdo, women copied the style. Hats were hard to wear on that puffery and fell out of fashion. Quickly arose the sexual revolution of the sixties, opening the possibility that, for some women at least, it is one short step from a woman removing her hat to dropping her pants.

Allow gay marriage if you wish, but mandate a requirement that women must wear hats (not caps) in all waking moments, preferably with lace and feathers. Society will be saved.
