The annual Rochester Mayo Cross Country Invitational in Rochester always draws a talented group of teams, and this year was no different. Included in the mix were top teams from Stillwater, Owatonna and Rochester Century.
So, Hastings coach John Dewall leaned on a couple Hastings runners to shake things up, and that exactly what they did. Jake Spitzack and Austin Reuter each went out fast at Thursday’s meet.
“They set the race up for us,” Dewall said. “They had a great performance in setting the race up for us.”
As the pack that chased after those two Hastings runners died out, Hastings’ Zack Benning came on strong. He ended up beating the No. 4-ranked runner in the state on his way to a second-place finish. He came in at 16 minutes and 9.7 seconds. The race’s winner, Wayde Hall, had a time of 15:52.7.
Hastings ended up placing 12th as a team. There were 20 teams at the meet, which was won by Stillwater.
Joe Rabaey finished 33rd for Hastings, finishing in 17:32.3.
Forrest Close was 80th in 18:41.4.
