The Hastings High School volleyball program will be participating in the Side-Out Foundation’s 2012 Dig Pink October Rally. This is a nationwide event in which middle and high schools and colleges designate a certain game or tournament as a Dig Pink day to both educate the community about breast cancer and raise funds to go toward breast cancer research and compassionate support services.
The Hastings volleyball team is supporting this cause on Tuesday, Oct. 9, in its game against Forest Lake High School. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., with the match starting at 7 p.m.
All supporters wearing the 2012 Hastings Dig Pink T-shirts will be eligible for prize drawings and one free slice of Green Mill pizza (available after the second set of the match).
T-shirts cost $10 each. Order forms and payment is due by Sunday, Sept. 30. T-shirt pickup is Monday, Oct. 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. outside the HHS gym, by the concessions.
The Side-Out Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to making a significant and identifiable difference in the lives of breast cancer patients and their families. It was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of advancing clinical trials, increasing compassionate support services and educating communities. The Side-Out Foundation contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it is in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support.
The term side-out refers to a situation in volleyball when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. It is hoped that The Side-Out Foundation will do the same for breast cancer patients, providing them with the support, education and best available treatments to regain control of their lives.
The Hastings volleyball program is selling Dig Pink T-shirts to players, fans, school staff and/or any community supporters. The profits from the T-shirts will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation. Hastings volleyball athletes are responsible for selling and promoting this event. In return for this community support, the program is providing free admittance to our match against Forest Lake. The program’s goals are to contribute to this reputable foundation and to increase community interest and support in Hastings’ own growing program.
Last fall, the Hastings High School volleyball program raised $1,200 for the Side-Out Foundation. The goal for this season’s Dig Pink event is to raise $2,500.
Sponsors are still being accepted for the event. Please contact Rita Girgen via email (email@example.com) or at 651-226-4103, if you are interested in being a Dig Pink sponsor.
