Suburban East Conference action wasn’t kind to the Hastings girls soccer team this week. After a 2-0 start to the season, Hastings lost to Stillwater in the SEC opener, 7-0.
“Stillwater jumped out on us once that whistle blew,” coach Scott Meier said. “They didn’t really give us a chance to settle in. We weathered the storm at first, but at a certain point in time, their speed up front caught up with us. They didn’t allow us to settle in and get any composure with the ball. We never really had possession.
“It was an early test for us. It highlighted some things we have to work on, but it doesn’t take away our progress to this point. We just ran into a better team at this particular point in the season.”
Meier was happy to see how much fight his team had in it, though.
“They kept working at it, trying to muster up some opportunities,” he said. “We just couldn’t get the result we wanted.”
Hastings plays host to Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday night for girls soccer youth night. Any girls who come to the game in their soccer jerseys will get in for free.
“We’re looking for a large crowd with all our younger players,” Meier said. “We’re welcoming all of them to come watch our game and cheer us on. We’ll welcome the support. Apple Valley is going to be a tough opponent for us.”
