The Hastings girls volleyball team turned things around on Thursday night with a win over Prescott, Wis., in a non-conference match.
“We played pretty well,” coach Rita Girgen said. “We started eliminating a lot of the errors we made in the previous two matches. That’s our big focus at this point – we’re trying to be aggressive both on and off the net, but we’re trying to minimize our errors while we are doing that.”
Hastings won 3-1.
“I’m really proud of the girls,” Girgen said. “Even though we ended up dropping a set, it was close, and they came out in the fourth set and played heads-up. They didn’t get down on themselves for dropping a set. They came out ready to play.”
Girgen was excited about the play of senior captain Grace Rolloff, who has acted as the team’s setter for the first few games of the season.
“Grace had a really good match,” she said. “She’s setting for us right now – that’s not her primary position, but she did a really good job of stepping up that night.”
Hastings is 1-2 in its first three matches of the year.
“We’re really excited about things,” Girgen said. “When we’re at full strength, we do believe we’re going to contend with everybody. Our goal is that we don’t want to lose in three – we’ve succeeded at doing that against Eastview and Northfield. We went five with Northfield and we really thought we should have won that match. We’re leaving everything out there. That is very promising for us.”
In that match against Northfield, Girgen said the play of Shelby Wassink really stuck out.
“She had phenomenal backcourt play,” she said. “She made digs and saves on the ball so many times for us. Just spectacular plays. She was a firestarter for us. She got the girls pumped up. That really pushed us through to make it five sets.”
