Watch the chimney swifts of downtown Hastings
Each fall Chimney Swifts gather in communal roosts before migrating to the Amazon Basin. Watch the Chimney Swifts on Wednesday, Aug, 29, starting at 7:15 p.m. The swifts gather at sunset in a swirling group, then drop like x-wing fighters into a chimney, where they will roost overnight, clinging to the sides of the chimney with their tiny toes. This tiny, flying insectivore’s population has declined more than 50 percent in the past 40 years. To learn more about these creatures, join Ron Windingstad, of Audubon Minnesota, for a brief outdoor presentation.

After the presentation we will count the swifts as they drop down the Hastings City Hall chimney. You may wish to bring your own folding chair. There is no charge for this program as it is co-sponsored by volunteers from Audubon Minnesota, Carpenter Nature Center and Hastings Environmental Protectors. RSVPs are welcomed, but not necessary. Please note: this program will take place near the corner of Fourth and Sibley streets in downtown Hastings.
