Letter: Doffing trial was a snapshot of ‘decaying morality’

Hastings police officer Rene Doffing took something that didn’t belong to him, no matter what the cost of the item, then makes up a story about wanting to talk to the Green Mill’s manager about how to get one of them. From your account of the trial, no one verified this statement.

To the editor,

Hastings police officer Rene Doffing took something that didn’t belong to him, no matter what the cost of the item, then makes up a story about wanting to talk to the Green Mill’s manager about how to get one of them. From your account of the trial, no one verified this statement.

His trial is a snapshot of the decaying morality and increasing apathy in this country. Also remember that the event took place here, the north central, traditionally untouched by big city crime rates and urban problems.

From the list of investigations and indiscretions reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press, involving this officer, it would appear that this officer has been a thorn in the side of the police chief for some time.

Since he has been found not guilty in the corkscrew matter, he will again be on the streets of Hastings. The problem, though, is that this officer has displayed very poor judgment in his actions. I do believe that the city could and should find a much better officer, especially since the officer carries a gun to enforce the law. Poor judgment and guns don’t mix.
