A new opportunity for this year's eighth graders at HMS is to join the Presidential Inauguration trip scheduled for Jan. 20 to Jan. 25, 2013. The trip was previously open only to all ninth through 11th grade Hastings area students. Registration is open now for any student in grades 8-11 or any adult who would like to attend this celebration of our democracy.

The trip will spend three days in Washington, one of those days focusing on all the events of Inauguration Day, the Oath of Office, Presidential Parade, and an Inaugural Ball. The other two days will be spent visiting many of the various monuments and museums present in the district. This trip is slower paced than the normal eighth grade trip, as travelers are traveling for six days instead of four. For the final three days travelers will go up to New York City to experience more culture and history. Some highlights will be Wall Street, Harlem, the Met, Rockefeller Plaza and Central Park. Extra special events would be to attend a Broadway show and a visit to the new 911 memorial park.

Eighth grade teachers at Hastings Middle School, Jim Hanson and Scott Smallidge at Hastings High School have registration packets for students to pick up. For more information, call Jim Hanson at 651-795-8598 or email him at jamhanson@hastings.k12.mn.us.
