It is hard to believe, but the section tournament has already arrived for the Hastings softball team. Hastings had its first round game on Wednesday against the winner of the Albert Lea and Northfield game. Results were not available at press time.
Hastings earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Northfield is seeded No. 5 and Albert Lea is No. 12.
If Hastings lost Wednesday night, their season is over.
If they won, they advance to a double-elimination, four-team tournament that begins at 5 p.m. Friday at Todd Park in Austin. Hastings would play Rochester John Marshall, Austin or Faribault in that game. John Marshall is the section’s No. 1 seed.
One very bad inning doomed Hastings in a non-conference game against Chanhassen last week. Hastings lost, 15-5, in five innings.
Chanhassen took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Hastings countered with three runs in the top of the third to go up, 3-2, but in the bottom of the third, the Storm scored 11 runs on a combination of fielding errors, throwing errors and hits.
“We had one error, and it just kind of snowballed after that,” coach Dean Robinson said. “We just couldn’t get out of the inning. It got out of hand, and they took advantage of it.”
Hastings got its runs in the third after Shelby Wassink reached and Michaela Mills singled. Hailey Lundquist knocked in two runs with a double. The third run was scored on a single by Kaitlyn Stark that scored Lundquist.
Hastings added two runs in the fifth inning. Mills walked and scored on another double by Lundquist. Mikayla Minnaert singled and then Alex Mohrhauser got on to score Lundquist.
Forest Lake won the conference this season with a 17-1 record.
