St. John’s students compete in science fair

Student scientists representing grades three through five at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion participated in the South Central/Southwest MN Regional Science Fair in Mankato last weekend.

Student scientists representing grades three through five at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion participated in the South Central/Southwest MN Regional Science Fair in Mankato last weekend. Competing against 561 other student projects, the St. John's students utilized many tools of scientific investigation along with the scientific method to conduct and document their research.  

Project categories included environmental sciences; energy and transportation; animal sciences; behavioral and social sciences; chemistry and biochemistry; family consumer science; health and human performance; microbiology; physical sciences; plant sciences; engineering, computers and math; and earth and planetary sciences. 

The St. John the Baptist students brought home many ribbons, awards and medals. Award winners were: Third grade: Molly Barker, blue ribbon book award; Lukas Hanson, blue ribbon book award; Grace Sieben, red ribbon; Hally Frandrup, blue ribbon; and Ben Kaiser, blue ribbon book award. Fourth grade: Christian Strommen, purple ribbon and first place; Isabelle Petit, blue ribbon book award; Eva Storkamp, purple ribbon and first place; Shawn Thorkildson, purple ribbon and first place; and Joey Nauer, purple ribbon book award. Fifth grade: Mason Murphy, purple ribbon and second place; Alayna Kasel, purple ribbon and first place; Jacob Biermaier, blue ribbon book award; Autumn Miller, blue ribbon; and Emily Clemens, blue ribbon book award.
