Filing period for area elections opens Tuesday
The filing period for city, county, state and federal offices opens Tuesday, May 22, and closes two weeks later, Tuesday, June 5.

For Hastings residents, the four City Council ward seats expire this year. Incumbents are Anthony Alongi, Ward 1; Joe Balsanek, Ward 2; Tony Nelson, Ward 3; and Danna Elling Schultz. 4. The term of office is four years.
Interested people can file at Hastings City Hall during regular business hours — 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At Dakota County, six of the seven commissioner seats will be on the ballots. There will be no election in District 2.
The District 1 seat currently held by Joseph Harris of Hastings would have been on the ballot this year for a four-year term, but due to redistricting, it will be a two-year term this election. Harris has announced he is not seeking another term.
Statewide, all Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate seats are on the ballot this year due to redistricting. None of the statewide offices—governor, secretary of state or attorney general – is on the ballot this year.
Hastings area legislators Rep. Denny McNamara, Republican; and Sen. Katie Sieben, Democrat, have both indicated they will seek re-election.
Candidates for state Legislature may file with the county in which they reside or in the office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
At the federal level, Hastings area voters will also vote for Congress — 2nd District. Rep. John Kline is the incumbent.
