The Hastings boys tennis team has played a number of close matches this year. On May 3, they finally won another one of them. Hastings beat Cretin-Derham Hall, 4-3, in St. Paul.
Hastings got two wins in singles and two in doubles.
In singles, the wins came from Ben Carlson at the No. 1 spot and Zach Mellick at No. 4.
Carlson kept his strong season going with a 6-4, 6-0 win.
Mellick won, 6-3, 6-2.
The doubles wins were earned by the No. 2 and No. 3 teams.
At second doubles, Craig Nielsen and Austin Houska won 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 3 team of Jalen Sneddeker and Ben Klimek won, 7-5, 6-4.
Falling in singles play were Steve Roach at the second spot and Alex Zuzek at No. 3.
In doubles, the top team of Cody Arndtson and Tyler Mellick lost a close match, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Hastings lost one of those close matches to Forest Lake, 4-3. Hastings lost all four singles spots, with Carlson, Roach, Zuzek and Zach Mellick falling.
In doubles, though, Hastings swept.
Ty Mellick and Arndtson won 6-2, 6-4.
Houska and Nielsen won 6-1, 6-4.
Sneddeker and Klimek won 6-0, 6-2.
Hastings lost to Rosemount on May 2, 4-3.
Carlson won again at first singles, 6-4, 6-1. Roach, Zuzek and Zach Mellick fell at the other three singles spots.
In doubles, Tyler Mellick and Arndtson lost a close match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
The No. 2 doubles team of Houska and Nielsen won a close match, 7-5, 7-6.
The third doubles team won 6-1, 7-5. That team was made up of Sneddeker and Klimek.
