This week is certainly a memorable one for Derek Stepan and Brad Stepan of Hastings.

Derek, who is playing with the National Hockey League's New York Rangers, is preparing for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Thursday night, New York advanced in a Game 7 matchup with Ottawa.

Earlier this week, Brad Stepan, Derek's father, was named the head coach for the Rosemount High School boys hockey team.

Brad Stepan is a former hockey standout in Hastings. He has coached in Hastings and at Henry Sibley and has also been a scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“Brad wowed the interview team with his enthusiasm, his confidence and his vision for building our boys hockey program,” Rosemount athletic director Mike Manning said.

The Irish had a 6-21 record last season in their final campaign under coach Scott Macho. The program won six games during the 2010-11 season, as well, and just three games apiece in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
