There’s good news for job seekers in Hastings. A new business, Valley Staffing, has opened its doors here to help them find work.
The Hastings office, located at 1125 South Frontage Road, Suite 7, is the company’s fourth location in the south metro. The other locations in Lakeville, Shakopee and Faribault have been successful, explained Rebecca Nelson, director of sales and training for Valley Staffing. Plus, they were seeing both applicants and employers from the Hastings area looking to their Lakeville location for help.
“We just felt there was a need,” said owner and president Tim Cook.
Another factor in choosing Hastings was geography. Potentially employees are typically willing to drive about 15 miles to work, Cook said. All four of his offices are close enough to each other that each 15-mile radius connects with at least one of the others.
The company works with job seekers and employers. When companies go through layoffs, they often come to a point when they realize they need extra staff to get through peak times or to handle overflow work that backs up on reduced staffs. When that happens, they often turn to a staffing company like Valley Staffing to fill those positions.
Job seekers can take advantage of the company’s client relationships to find a job. When an applicant comes to Valley Staffing, he or she speaks with an account manager who helps determine employment history, the type of job being sought and the applicant’s skills and experience. Based on that, account managers find positions to fit each applicant with one of their employer clients.
Applicants can find work in light industrial or clerical fields, but within those two divisions is a mass of possible positions, from assembly to skilled industrial work or front desk to executive administration. Valley Staffing has even placed a few plant supervisors and managers, Nelson said.
Recent years have been a struggle for many job seekers, but for Valley Staffing, business is good.
“We’re probably as busy as we’ve been since 2006,” Cook said.
Staffing companies are often an early indicator of the job market, he said, as they’ll realize slowdowns and pickups as soon as they happen. Seeing his own company’s growth, Cook is optimistic about the larger economic situation.
A look at the numbers shows just how successful the company is. Each week, Valley Staffing sends out about 300 to 350 employees. That can rise to about 400 during seasonal times. They deal with anywhere from 125 to 150 employer clients each week as well.
Valley Staffing opened in Hastings April 2. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Two account managers, Melissa Geis and Pauline Ozmun, staff the office here. Both Geis and Ozmun previously worked at the Lakeville office.
