The Hastings girls softball team lost its first game of the year, falling on Monday to White Bear Lake, 9-5.
“This definitely gives us stuff we need to work on in practice — there are some things we need to clean up,” coach Dean Robinson said. “A lot of their runs were due to things we weren’t doing correctly as a team. There were a few times we should have been out of innings, and there were errors here and there. More so, it just shows us where we stand. If we clean our act up, we’re winning games like the one we just lost.”
Several Hastings batters fared well in the season’s first game.
Hailey Lundquist knocked in the year’s first run for the Raiders, which came in the third inning. Michaela Mills followed that with a two-run double.
In the fifth, Lundquist hit a home run.
In the seventh, after singles by Kaitlin Stark and Lori Bauer, Rachel Thomas knocked in a run.
Kaylynn Johnson had three hits on the day.
Making her first varsity start was pitcher Courtney Van De Velde. She surrendered four home runs and wasn’t helped by the errors in the field, Robinson said.
“We have to do our part behind her,” he said.
White Bear Lake scored one run in the first and one run in the third. Their big inning was the fourth, when they added four runs.
Single runs were added by the Bears in the fifth and the sixth innings.
