Costly stretch too much to overcome for Raiders

Many coaches in many different sports spend a lot of their time focusing on key turning points in each game. Hastings boys basketball coach Chad Feikema is no different.

This week, he’s replaying in mind a big point of last week’s game against White Bear Lake. In the second half, Hastings went on a nice run, scoring six quick points to cut their halftime deficit from eight points to two. A few minutes later, Hastings trailed by six and got a layup that would have cut the deficit back to four.

Hastings missed the layup, though, and just seconds later, White Bear Lake scored on a layup of its own. The Bears player was fouled and made the free throw. All of a sudden, Hastings trailed by nine instead of four, and the lead quickly ballooned to 20. The Bears ended up winning 77-58.

“We played them really well for a while,” Feikema said. “We controlled the tempo pretty well, offensively. We were able to get some good shots. We made some, and we missed some, but we were executing pretty well.”

White Bear Lake held a 41-33 lead at halftime. They outscored Hastings 36-25 in the second half.

Quintan Weaver led Hastings with 17 points.

Ellis Williams also was in double figures. He had 13 points.

Also scoring were: Connor Raway, two; Ben Carlson, three; Alex Wiese, five; Bryce Garvey, two; Darius Wilkerson, eight; and DaShaun Harris, eight.

Hastings has an 8-14 overall record on the season.

Vs Woodbury

Hastings lost to Woodbury on Tuesday night, 69-57.

A rough first half spelled doom for the Raiders, who trailed by 14 at halftime.

Hastings outscored Woodbury by two points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Wilkerson and Weaver each had 16 points. Josh Monjeau had nine, Williams had six, Carlson had two, Hoffman had two and Harris had six.
