Letter: Using roof space for solar power is good step

To the editor,
It is encouraging to hear that our legislature is considering a proposal to utilize roof space on public buildings for generating solar power. In addition to reducing energy costs in the long run for the state (currently importing energy costs Minnesota about $15 to $20 billion a year) it would give a boost to our local economy. There are a number of renewable energy companies in the state who would create badly needed jobs.
Many renewable technologies were invented in the U.S. and then languished due to lack of support or active opposition. Other countries, especially China, have taken advantage of this neglect and are investing heavily in manufacturing renewable hardware.
Minnesota has an opportunity to take part in an effort to make our country a serious player in the renewable energy game. We hope the ball isn't fumbled.
