Fire and accident report for the week ending Feb. 6
Here is this week's fire and accident report.
Tuesday, Jan. 31
A mattress leaning against the north side of Graphic Design was found on fire at 5:07 p.m. Jan. 31. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which did not spread to the building. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
A business in the 100 block of East Second Street reported smelling natural gas in the rear of the building at 5:44 p.m. Jan. 31. Responders also noticed an odor, but a gas monitor reported no presence of gas. The fire department notified the gas company and waited at the scene until the gas company arrived.
A two vehicle crash was reported at 12:09 p.m. Jan. 31 in the 1800 block of Oak Street. Nicholas Wasylik, 67 of Hastings, was backing out of a driveway and ran into another vehicle driving on the road. Wasylik reported a bush was blocking his view and he couldn’t see the other vehicle. He reported some back pain but declined transport to the hospital. Damage was estimated at more than $1,000.
Thursday, Feb. 2
While driving at about 7 a.m. Feb. 2, Steven Green, 41 of Hastings, hit a patch of ice and slid into a tree in the 200 block of General Sieben Drive. Police noted it was still dark out with heavy fog and temperatures near freezing. No injuries were reported.
Monday, Feb. 6
A gas leak was reported at a home in the 100 block of East Eighth Street at 9:06 a.m. Feb. 6. Firefighters smelled gas when they arrived and found a leak near the boiler. They shut the valve and notified CenterPoint Energy.
