Wrestlers remain undefeated in SEC

The Hastings Raiders wrestling team kept their undefeated Suburban East Conference string intact Thursday night with a dominating performance over the visiting Mounds View Mustangs. The Raiders won nine of 15 matches on the night.
Hastings’ Spencer Kopp began the dual with an over powering performance against Tanner Day. Kopp started the scoring with a takedown and three nearfall points to lead 5-0 after one period. In the second period Day closed the gap with a takedown of his own. Leading 5-2 going into the third period Kopp scored his second takedown of the match and added three more nearfall points the earn a major decision of 10-2.
113 pound sophomore Josh Loiacano took advantage of his first varsity match of the year with a first-period pin. At 120 pounds, third ranked Luke Rowh dominated Mounds View’s Joe Janey on his way to a first-period pin of his own, giving the Raiders a 16-0 lead after three matches.
At 126 pounds, the Raiders dropped their first match of the dual, 6-9. Bill Norris received a forfeit at 132 pounds with Eric Bauer claiming a 17-2 technical fall at 138 pounds to increase Hastings’ lead to 27-3.
At 145 pounds, Dan Marquette earned the Raiders’ third pin of the night at 1:49 of the first period. Jake Anderson won a hard-fought 4-3 decision with a reversal as time was running out in the third period.
Mounds View earned their second win of the night at 160 pounds, but Hastings’ Hunter Swenson responded with 16-5 major decision to bring the score to 40-6. With the win Swenson sealed the dual victory for the Raiders.
The marque match of the night occurred at 182 pounds with the Raiders fifth-ranked wrestler Jake Swenson taking on the Mustangs third-ranked wrestler Richard Carlson. Carlson started the scoring with a takedown for the only points of the first period. Swenson answered with an escape in the second period to pull within one at the end of two periods. Swenson was unable to do much on top, which allowed Carlson to earn an escape. With Swenson attempting to score a takedown to tie the match, Carlson countered and scored his own takedown to earn a 5-1 decision.
The Mustangs won a high- scoring match at 195 pounds to close the gap at 40-12.
Isaac Eichmann controlled his match at 220 pounds on his way to earning his first win of the 2011 season with a 9-2 decision.
Mounds View won the final match of the night with 9-3 decision to end the scoring at 43-15.
Up next for the Raiders is the annual Minnesota Christmas Tournament on Dec. 16 -17 at the RCTC in Rochester. Wrestling starts at 2 p.m. Friday.
