A 20-year-old Hastings man died Monday afternoon at Regions Hospital in St. Paul as a result of injuries suffered when his car struck a large truck on Hwy. 35, about two miles northwest of Hager City, Wis.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department identified the victim as Aaron Schuster. He was the sole occupant of a Chevrolet Cavalier, northbound on Hwy. 35, that crossed the centerline and struck a southbound Sterling heavy truck driven by Dale Nord, 43, of Goodhue, Minn.
Nord told officers he'd moved his truck partially onto the shoulder but was unable to avoid the collision, which occurred about 2 p.m. The truck was registered to Lodermeiers Inc., a Goodhue, Minn., farm equipment dealer.
The semi- stopped in the northbound lane and the Cavalier came to rest in the southbound ditch. The crash site was between CTH K and 830th Street.
Schuster was initially treated by medical staff from Fairview Red Wing Medical Center who stopped to assist prior to arrival of Red Wing fire and ambulance personnel and Ellsworth Fire Department members.
After being extricated from the car, he was transported from the scene to Regions by a medical helicopter but was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m.
Sgt. Mike Waltz commended the Fairview staff members for their help, in addition to employees from Holst Excavating, who assisted with traffic direction before authorities arrived.
