Police: Cottage Grove 14-year-old stole car, went for late-night drive

A 14-year-old Cottage Grove girl faces juvenile criminal charges after she allegedly stole a neighbor’s car and went for a drive in the middle of the night.

A Cottage Grove police officer on patrol about 2 a.m. Tuesday observed a vehicle fail to signal at the intersection of 100th Street and Ideal Avenue. The officer stopped the vehicle and determined that the driver had no license and was 14 years old. Police then found that the girl was driving a vehicle she had stolen from a neighbor. She previously had stolen the car key from the neighbor.

The girl was referred to the Youth Service Bureau for vehicle theft and the case was referred to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for a possible juvenile charge of felony auto theft.
