Swimmers move up a spot at SEC relays

The fall swimming season is under way for the Hastings girls team. So far, things look good for the Raiders, who improved their place at the annual Suburban East Conference relays by one spot as compared to last year.

The fall swimming season is under way for the Hastings girls team. So far, things look good for the Raiders, who improved their place at the annual Suburban East Conference relays by one spot as compared to last year.

Hastings scored 70 points to place fifth in the meet.

Stillwater won the relays with 154 points. Woodbury was second (138), Mounds View was third (112) and East Ridge was fourth (76).

The Hastings swimmer of the meet was freshman Morgan McCullough, who had three personal-best times in her three events.

She led off on a 400 medley relay team doing the backstroke. She was also a member of the 200 backstroke relay and the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay.

Results from the meet went like this:

400 medley relay – team of Brina Kari, Kate Reilly, Leah Wallace and Allissa Smith, first, 4:10.40; team of Morgan McCullough, Alyssa Spitzack, Marissa Novak and Sam Matsch, 10th, 4:39.35.

200 freestyle relay – Melanie Waibel, Greta Utecht, Nicole Girgen and Megan Jahnke, 10th, 1:59.65; team of Liz Cole, Liz Pagel, Julia Donath and Novak, 20th, 2:30.86.

400 medley relay – team of Abbie Gjelhaug, Breanna Kimmes, Mariah Wallace and Melanie Waibel, fourth, 4:39.84.

200 butterfly – team of Gjelhaug, Spitzack, Matsch and Mariah Wallace, fifth, 2:02.29; team of Melanie Waibel, Utecht, Valentia Tipler and Christina Gillard, 10th, 2:12.71.

800 freestyle relay – team of Leah Wallace, Smith, Kari and Reilly, fourth, 8:27.68.

200 freestyle relay – team of Cole, Donath, Jahnke, Tipler, Girgen, Pagel, Novak and Gillard, 11th, 2:04.80.

200 backstroke relay – team of Kimmes, Utecht, McCullough and Tipler, ninth, 2:19.01.

200 breaststroke relay – team of Spitzack, Gillard, Mariah Wallace and Girgen, sixth, 2:28.63.

400 freestyle relay – team of Reilly, Leah Wallace, Smith and Kari, third, 3:46.71; team of Gjelhaug, Kimmes, Matsch and McCullough, eighth, 4:03.25.
