Hastings City Council member Mike Slavik announced Tuesday morning he will run for the Dakota County Board of Commissioners. The District 1 seat will become vacant next year, as incumbent Joe Harris has announced he will not seek reelection.
“Joe has been a dedicated public servant who has served the district well,” Slavik said. “I am running because the county will face a new generation of challenges and I represent a unique mix of private and public sector skills that can meet those challenges.”
Slavik, a Hastings native, is currently serving his second term on the Hastings City Council as an at large member and also serves on both the Dakota County Communications Center (DCC) Board of Directors and the Highway 61 Bridge Visual Quality Team. While on the council, Slavik has chaired the parks and recreation, operations and public safety committees and serves on the finance and planning committees.
His diverse experience and interest in a variety of policy areas have given Slavik a unique perspective that he looks forward to sharing in this campaign.
“I am looking forward to a vigorous campaign," he said. "I look forward to meeting and listening to residents across the district in the coming year.”
Slavik is a graduate of Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, with a Bachelor’s degree in political science. He works as a Realtor at Keystone Real Estate in Hastings. He is also part owner and President of Hometown Laundry LLC, a Laundromat and real estate holdings company. Currently he serves on the Hastings Area YMCA Board of Directors, the Hastings High School Alumni Board and his church council.
District 1 communities include Coates, Farmington, Hampton, Hastings, Lakeville Precinct 13, Miesville, New Trier, Randolph, Vermillion, Northfield Precinct 3; Townships of Castle Rock, Douglas, Empire, Eureka, Greenvale, Hampton, Marshan, Nininger, Randolph, Ravenna, Sciota, Vermillion and Waterford.
