Playgrounds In The Summer is a program scheduled at various parks in Hastings throughout the week. PITS takes place at Lions Park Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with play resuming at 1:30 p.m. and lasting until 3:30 p.m.

PITS is a free program offered through Hastings Community Education and is designed for post-kindergartners to sixth graders. Children are welcome to come and go as they please.

All they need is a parent’s phone number.

Each week is represented by a theme. For the week of June 27, the theme was carnival games. Kids brought socks from home, decorated them and made beanbags out of them. At the end of the week, kids participated in a scavenger hunt with prizes.

“PITS provides entertainment for kids during the summer and allows them to interact with other kids, get outside, and do different activities,” said Katie Gapp, PITS leader for Lions Park.

Each day there is a range from five to 25 kids who come to Lions Park to participate in PITS.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Mya Taylor. “We get to do different crafts, activities, and spend time with different friends.”
