Hastings High School senior Treya Connell is one of the finalists for the Ms. Softball award, given annually to the top senior in the state. Connell is the team's pitcher and its best hitter.
She leads the team with a .535 batting average. She has struck out just once on the season. In 96 innings of pitching, she has struck out 159 batters and she has a 0.73 ERA.
"I really consider the Ms. Softball a team award," Hastings coach Dean Robinson said. "There are a lot of girls who make plays behind the pitchers. This is an award for everybody on the team. It shows that if we pull together and play as a team, we'll have girls get noticed.
"It's a bonus for the program, no matter who gets the recognition."
This is the second straight year Hastings has had a player nominated for the award. Last year, catcher Jordan Schaffer was one of the finalists.
Hastings begins play in the postseason at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at home.
Hastings, the No. 1 seed, will play the winner of the day's first game, which begins at 3:30 p.m. No. 8-seeded Faribault will play against No. 9-seeded Rochester Century.
If Hastings wins, they'll play in the four-team section tournament in Austin. The first Hastings game would be at 5 p.m. Friday.
