The City of Hastings and the Bless Hastings volunteer organization are coordinating efforts in preparation of the predicted spring flooding along the Mississippi River in Hastings.
With the recently-revised prediction of a river stage at 20 feet, or 5 feet above flood level, expected by Monday, March 28, and the water continuing to rise, the city is obtaining the necessary supplies needed for sandbagging efforts. Volunteers are being requested to help fill sandbags this Saturday, March 26. Volunteers will later be asked to help place the sandbags when needed.
Anyone interested in helping to fill the sandbags is asked to contact John Mitchem at the Hastings United Methodist Church, 651-437-4398 or 1-303-885-7883 (cell), or Patrick Walker at 651-214-0753. Those interested in helping can also sign up on line at http://www.hastingsumc.org/app.
An informational meeting for volunteers will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at the United Methodist Church, 615 W. 15th St.
The filling of the sandbags will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 26, in the south parking lot of Christ’s Family Church, 518 E. Second St. The intent is to prepare 20,000 sandbags this weekend and have them stockpiled and ready to be placed around homes when needed.
Any resident of Hastings expected to need help sandbagging their property is asked to contact Mitchem with Bless Hastings at the United Methodist Church, 651-437-4398.
