Raider wrestlers start season with four wins

The Hastings Raiders wrestling team, ranked 25th in the country, started the season off running with a 4-0 record.

The Hastings Raiders wrestling team, ranked 25th in the country, started the season off running with a 4-0 record. Ranked wrestlers for the Raiders are Isaac Bauer (#7 at 103), Eric Bauer (#3 at 125), Corey Latuff (#4 at 130), Jeff Engstrom (#6 at 140), Zach Rohr (#2 at 145), Colten LaChance (#2 at 152), Jake Swenson (#4 at 171), and Isaac Eichmann (#3 at 215).

Hastings began the SEC season in convincing fashion by shutting out Park (Cottage Grove) on Friday night. The Raiders cruised to a 73-0 rout on parent’s night. From top to bottom, the Raiders established their dominance by amassing eight pins, three decisions, and one major decision. A forfeit and an injury default rounded out the scoring.

Three Raiders, freshman Bill Norris, eighth-grader Jake Anderson and junior Jake Anderson made their varsity debuts with wins.

Raider Duals

An early snow storm could not stop the Raiders Saturday morning. They demonstrated how talented and deep they are with the varsity and JV teams crushing the competition.

Hastings started the morning duals with an overpowering performance against Centennial with the team scoring plenty of bonus points. The Raiders finished the dual with 8 pins, 1 major, 1 decision, and 2 forfeits.

Luke Rowh (103) started the dual off with second period pin. Isaac Bauer (112), ranked No. 7 at 103 pounds, faced James Stefonick, ranked No. 5 at 112 pounds. As expected, the match between Bauer and Stefonick went back and forth with Bauer prevailing with a 9-6 decision. Dan Gove, next for the Raiders, took little time in recording a first period pin to push the lead to 15-0.

After giving up a pin at 125 pounds, the Raiders responded with Corey Latuff (130) righting the ship with a major decision to put Hastings up 19-6. Junior captain Eric Bauer (135), Dylan Nelson (145), senior captain Zach Rohr (152), Jake Rachuy (160), Jake Swenson (171), and Isaac Eichmann (215) all recorded pins on their way to putting away their competition.

In round two, Hastings kept up the pressure by soundly defeating Stoughton, Wis. Again, the Raiders dominated most of the matches by earning 9 pins, 1 tech fall, and 2 decisions.

The duo of Rowh (103) and Bauer (112) put Hastings in front 9-0. After a loss at 119 pounds to No. 8 ranked Nick Urso, Raider Bill Norris (125) worked a 7-4 victory to give Hastings a 12-4 lead. Latuff (130) and Dan Marquette (135) each recorded their own pins to push the lead to 24-4. Bauer (140) followed up with a tech fall. The Raiders saw Nelson (145), Rohr (152), Engstrom (160), Rachuy (171), Lohmann (189), and Eichmann all pin their way to a victory.

Round three saw two of the top wrestling teams in AAA go at it on the mat. This highly anticipated match between Hastings and Coon Rapids ended up more lopsided than in years past, with the last couple of years going down to the final match before Hastings prevailed. Saturday, the Raiders were too much for Coon Rapids as they ran away with the match.

Again Rowh (103) and Bauer (112) put Hastings out front before Coon Rapids responded at 119 and 125 to tie the score at 9-9.

At 130 pounds, Latuff (No. 4 at 130) faced Darren Gagne (No. 5 at 135). The two wrestled to a scoreless first period before Latuff was awarded a penalty point when Gagne was called for clasping. Latuff also earn an escape and take down to lead 4-0 after two periods. Gagne’s only point came on an escape in the third period as Latuff won 4-1, giving Hastings the lead for good at 12-9.

Marquette (135) and Bauer (140) added to the totals with a pin and tech fall respectively pushing the lead to 23-9.

After a close loss at 145 pounds, Rohr (152) scored a major decision to give Hastings a 27-12 lead.

Engstrom (160), Swenson (171), and Lohmann (189) put the finishing touch on the win with each of them earning pins and extending the lead to 45-12.

There was a battle of ranked wrestlers at 215 pounds where Eichmann (No. 3 at 215) fell to Michael Burckhardt (No. 9 at 189) in double overtime 3-1.

Wrestlers who went 4-0 for the weekend were Luke Rowh, Isaac Bauer, Eric Bauer, and Zach Rohr. Wrestlers who went 3-0 were Corey Latuff, Jeff Engstrom, and Jake Swenson. Wrestlers who went 2-0 were Dan Marquette and Jake Rachuy.

JV Wrestlers go undefeated

Just like the varsity, the JV wrestlers dominated their opponents as well. The JV defeated Centennial 48-24 in round 1. The Raiders followed their opening act with a 63-0 win in round 2 over Stoughton. In Round 3 the JV finished their weekend strong by topping Coon Rapids 52-24.

Several wrestlers capped an undefeated weekend. During the Raider duals Jacob Spitzack, Alex Jones, and Bryan Rachuy were 3-0. While wrestlers Luis Sanchez, Spencer Connell, Alex Nygaard, Andy Rachuy, Cody Wagner, and Hunter Swenson all finished the duals at 2-0.
