Be creative with those aluminum pop cans and plastic milk jugs and you could win a cash prize in a Rivertown Days competition sponsored by the City of Hastings Parks and Recreation Department and Waste Management. Additional funding has been received from Dakota county and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
In addition to winning some cash prizes, participants will hopefully, learn some more about recycling materials and that they be used again.
The “Whatever Floats Your Boat” race will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Lake Rebecca boat launch.
Participants must build a boat or raft from materials that are at least 50 percent recycled or recyclable. There is no size limit. The race is against other boats and/or rafts of similar materials. There are cash prizes.
“The more recycled materials, the better,” said parks and recreation department administrative assistant Kristin Behrens.
First place team wins $200 cash. Second place receives $100 and third place receives $50.
There will also be $100 cash presented to the team with the boat that is voted most creative and $100 cash to the team that has the best used of recycled materials.
Registration must be received by Tuesday, July 13. The forms are available on the city’s web site at www.ci.hastings.mn.us, and can be e-mailed to Behrens at email@example.com. Or they can be faxed to 651-437-5396. Teams can have names, too.
Each person on the boat/or raft must wear a United States Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
