Cardinals put an end to Hawks’ winning streak

The Hampton Cardinals ended the Hastings Hawks’ four-game winning streak Sunday.

The Hampton Cardinals ended the Hastings Hawks’ four-game winning streak Sunday.

Duane Slinde, a left-handed pitcher for the Cardinals, pitched seven innings, gave up only one run and struck out five Hastings batters. Tyler Judkins scored one in the fourth for Hampton, and Brandon Boyd and Kyle Raines scored two more in the fifth. Boyd scored again in the top of the sixth to lead Hastings 4-0.

Pat Kelly scored the Hawks’ first run in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Andy Salmela and in reply, the Cardinals sent two more runners home in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hastings managed to put a dent in Hampton’s lead. Running for Jordy Horsch, Ryan Bermiester scored with Kelly on a double by Steve Krashaar, and Krashaar scored the last run of the game later that inning. Hastings lost 6-4.

David Vogelgesang was the Hawks’ starting pitcher and was replaced by Adam Barta at the beginning of the sixth inning.
