For 17 years, the Hastings boys swim team has been coached by Gerry Rupp.
Going into this season, his team had defeated Woodbury just once.
So, forgive Rupp if he’s especially happy this week. Hastings beat Woodbury last week, 86-79, in a meet that wasn’t nearly as close as the score would indicate.
“That was fun,” Rupp said. “1995 is the last time we beat Woodbury in a dual meet.”
Hastings swam exhibition-only in the final two events to give some points to the Royals so the score would look more respectable. Woodbury’s team was certainly hurt this year with the addition of the new East Ridge High School.
“Woodbury lost three of its best swimmers to East Ridge,” Rupp said. “When you lose three of your best guys, you have no depth. Woodbury had one very good swimmer that night. It just so happened that Elliott (Wilcox) matched up against him and beat him in the 50 freestyle.”
Hastings certainly earned the win.
Best times were turned in by a number of swimmers.
Hayden Schmitt, for example, cut two seconds off his 200 freestyle time and had a season-best swimming the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay. Schmitt also had a lifetime-best swim in the 100 butterfly.
Thomas Everson cut four seconds off his 200 freestyle time to win his race.
Michael Rough had a good meet, too. He had a season-best time as well.
