A great season just keeps getting better for the Hastings girls cross country team. The Raiders placed a close second at the Rochester Mayo Invitational last week, coming in just behind Mayo.
After the scores were first tallied, as a matter of fact, the meet was a tie. The tiebreaking sixth runner’s results were used, and Hastings lost on the tiebreaker.
“To finish second out of 19 teams, that was pretty good,” Hastings coach John Dewall said. “The girls looked good. They ran together. Kelly (Pechous), Maddy (O’Brien) and Bri (Strandberg) were rocking and rolling. (Alicia) Beattie finished good again, and she had Clarese (Mancl) right behind her.
“It’s amazing. if you look at the results, a second here and a second there made the difference. One second basically decided the meet.”
The sixth Hastings runner was Brittney Huneke.
“The girls did a fantastic job,” Dewall said. “I’ll tell you, they’re performing well. I can see them cracking the top 10 in the state rankings here pretty quick after a race like that.”
Results from the girls meet went like this:
Pechous, fifth, 15:47.50; O’Brien, 10th, 16:14.04; Strandberg, 14th, 16:27.52; Beattie, 26th, 16:42.44; Mancl, 28th, 16:49.58; and Huneke, 71st, 18:07.93.
Hastings and Mayo each finished with 80 points. Eastview was third with 84, and Red Wing was fourth with 106.
The Hastings boys team ran in the junior varsity race because the coaches/teachers had to return for parent’s night at the high school.
Hastings placed sixth in the junior varsity portion of the meet with 139 points. Stillwater had 25 points to win the meet.
