Enjoy root beer floats June 9

The Pleasant Hill Library will host its annual Root Beer Float Party from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 9.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library and is the official kick-off of the Summer Reading Program. The theme of this year’s event is “Be Creative.”

Children will be able to sign up for the summer reading program and pick up their reading logs for the summer.

The Root Bear Float Party will feature a wide range of activities for children and their parents, including a tattoo booth, games, a scavenger hunt, and a parade. Children will also have a chance to make a variety of crafts such as musical instruments, windsocks, puppets, and a special cloud collage. Everyone who attends the party will be treated to a frosty root beer float.

The Summer Reading Club will offer special programs for children throughout the summer months, reading incentives and other activities.

There is no charge for the Root Beer Float Party, and registration is not required.

Alumni will hold banquet June 13

The Hastings High School Alumni Association banquet and meeting will be held Saturday, June 13, in the commons area of Hastings High School, 200 General Sieben Drive.

The evening will begin with tours of the school at 4 p.m. The anniversary classes will ring the old school bell at 4:30 p.m. There will be a social hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by dinner catered by the Point Restaurant and Cafe. The evening will include entertainment and memories.

Tickets are $15 per person and must be paid for in advance. Tickets can be reserved by calling Rita Bremer at 437-3241.

Spring garage and bake sale at Regina

The Regina Medical Center Auxiliary will hold its annual spring garage and bake sale June 10, 11, and 12 in the chapel lobby of the Regina Medical Center, 1175 Nininger Road, Hastings. The public is invited to attend.

Hours June 10 will be from noon to 7 p.m.; June 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and June 12 (a bag sale), from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A bake sale will be held all three days.

Donations of clean and gently used items will be accepted from the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday, June 5. They may be brought to the activities room in the Regina Residence. The following items will not be accepted: fitness equipment, baby equipment (such as car seats, swings, cribs), clothing, shoes, furniture, large light fixtures, winter sporting equipment or Christmas items. Electronic equipment in good working condition will be accepted.

Health and Wellness offered for seniors

Jenny Wilcox, a personal trainer with the SilverSneakers Fitness Program, will be presenting a session on “Secrets of Staying Healthy This Summer” at 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, at the Hastings Area YMCA. The program is free, and refreshments will be served.

There will be a free fitness class offered to Medicare-eligible adults at 9 a.m., and is open to the public (show identification at front desk).

Teens can volunteer at the library

The library is looking for teens ages 12 to 18 who are willing to volunteer at least 12 hours during the summer. Schedules may be arranged to fit around activities, vacations, and other commitments. Shifts are generally two hours per week. Teens will assist young children with registering and collecting prizes for the summer reading program.

Teens interested in volunteering at the library may pick up a volunteer sign-up sheet at any of the teen events or at the front desk of the library. Call the library at 438-0200 for more information.

Teens have summer reading program

Dakota County Library’s teen summer reading program begins June 8. Twelve to 18-year-olds will find activities designed just for them when they join the teen summer reading club, “Express Yourself at Your Library,” at Dakota County Libraries.

The reading club begins June 8 and runs through Aug. 8 and encourages teens to read and have fun at the library this summer. Teens receive a teen summer events packet as well as a small prize when they sign up for the club. Reading books and writing short book reviews will get them entered into a weekly prize drawing. A digital photo contest and end-of-the-summer party are also planned.

The monthly meeting of the Dakota County Soil Dakota and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4.

Library classes offered in summer

The Pleasant Hill Library is hosting a series of free computer classes for adults throughout the summer months.

Registration is required due to limited seating and begins two weeks prior to the start date of the class. Those interested may register at the library or at the website, www.dakotacounty.us/library. Click on calendar of events to find the classes.

The first class is “Computer Basics,” and is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10. No previous experience is needed. The class will introduce participants to the parts and uses of a home computer, the mouse and the keyboard, as well as basic computer terminology.

A follow-up class, “Beyond Computer Basics” will be offered from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. Registration begins June 3.

Participants will be introduced to working with Windows and toolbar menus.

‘Serving others helps’ is topic

The topic will be “Serving Others Helped Me” when the Hastings Area Grief Coalition meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Hastings Area Senior Center, 213 Ramsey St.

Arlone Crowson will present the topic. Crowson has found giving of herself to help others has helped her to heal following the death of her husband and other family members.

The topic June 4 is “How to Keep Moving On” and will be presented by Brad Martel of the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home.

All Grief Coalition meetings are open to the community.

Garage, bake sale scheduled

The summer camps at Carpenter offer unique experiences for children to laugh, play and learn in nature.

Professional staff will guide children through interactive, age appropriate inspiring activities including games, crafts, nature hikes and more.

Fishing fun, a half-day adventure is for children ages 4 through 11 years. It’s scheduled June 25, July 29 and Aug. 11.

Nestlings day camp is a four-day adventure for children ages 4 though 6 years. It’s half days from July 7 though july 10.

Children will make crafts, play games, have a snack and explore, learning to be comfortable in nature with other kids, and in a camp settings. There will be a family picnic the last day.

Free flyers full-day camp is for children ages 8 through 11 years old. The camp, July 20 through July 24, is a time for these kids to spread their wings. There will be beach time, a canoe adventure and a camp-out. There will be a family picnic the last day.

Fledglings half-day camp is for children ages 6 through 8. The camp, Aug.3 through Aug. 7 will be a time to examine trails and wildlife at CNC. There will also be crafts, games and more, with a family picnic the last day.

Preschoolers will explore the ponds

Preschooler will explore the ponds at Carpenter Nature Center to look for tadpoles and frogs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 12. CNC’s preschool story times are designed to introduce young children, ages 2 through 5 (with a parent or guardian), to nature in a fun and safe environment. The fun-filled hour of activities includes a nature story, an art or craft project, an exploration of the outdoors, and observation of live animals.

Home schoolers learn all about maps

Carpenter Nature Center’s quarterly program for home schoolers from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. June 12 will be about maps.

The program for students ages 5 though 9 is about a Map Reading Mystery to look at various types of maps and use map-reading skills to find a hidden treasure. Older students (ages 10 and older) will learn how to read a map, use a compass and combine the skills to compete on a timed orienteering course. The majority of the program will be outside, so dress appropriately for the weather.

Reservations are required. The program fee is $5 ($3 for members).

Looking to join a book group? The LeDuc Book Group meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the LeDuc mansion.

The June book selection is “One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd” by Jim Fergus and is an imaginative, fictional account of an 1875 attempt to achieve peace on the western plains through a “brides for Indians” program.

The book for July is “Ironclad Alibi: a Harrison Raines Civil War Mystery.”

The Hastings High School class of 2004 will hold its five-year reunion at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at RJ’s Tavern. The reunion will be held on the second level, and there is no cost to attend. Smart Ride will give a discount to 2004 alumni who may need a ride after the reunion.

Kick off the summer and kick up a little rock and roll during the Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution jam session at the library from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4. Jam sessions are open to pre-teens and teens. There is no charge for the event, and registration is not required.

‘Microscope Magic’

is for family fun

Investigate some everyday items such as sand, fabrics, and kitchen powders through the magnified view of the microscope from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at Carpenter Nature Center.

Feel free to bring your own specimens from home or look at things collected from the grounds of the nature center.

Bring water shoes to collect aquatic critters from the wetland to observe under the microscopes. Several field microscopes will be available for hands-on activities, led by microscopy experts from the Minnesota Microscopy Society.

You’ll even be able to print your favorite and take it home with you.

The program fee is $4 ($3 for members), with a maximum of $10 for a family.

The last YMCA Teen Night of the school year will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, June 5, for youth in grades six through eight. There will be dancing, games, food and more.

Summer, fishing

go hand-in-hand

Join the Carpenter Nature Center staff from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 25 for a half day of fishing fun. Bring your own rod and reel if you have one, or use one provided.

The majority of the time will be at the river, so bring a water bottle and sunscreen; dress to be outside.

The program is recommended for children 4 to 11 years old.

The program fee is $25 ($15 for members).

‘Tour de Pepin’

is June 6

The Second Tour de pepin bicycle tour around Lake Pepin will be Saturday, June 6. Bicyclists can register online at www.tourdepepin.com; registration is limited to 400.

The course takes bicyclists from Lake City to Stockholm, Wis., a distance of 32 miles. From Stockholm, the cyclists will relax and return to Lake City across Lake Pepin on the Pearl of the Lake Excursion Boat. Others can ride the full course around Lake Pepin, 72 miles.

The day culminates with music and fun at Ohuta Park in Lake City.

Art Attack returns

to library June 12

Back by popular demand, the Pleasant Hill Library will hold another Art Attack from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, June 12. The theme of this Art Attack program will be “Midsummer Magic.”

Art Attack is one of the first events in the summer-long reading program at the library. The theme for the summer reading club is “Be Creative.” Kids may pick up a full calendar of events at the library anytime.

Art Attack is designed to give kids of all ages a chance to create their own work of art while visiting the library. Kids will have a chance to make a variety of projects. The library will provide the supplies; kids supply the creativity!

Learning to deal with hard times

An open discussion will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 8, at Second Street Coffee, 202 E. Second St. and will be about dealing with hard times. The Rev. Connie Claxton of St. Luke's Episcopal Church will lead the discussion.

All who are interested are invited for a few magic tricks, coffee and conversation. It will be a time to talk and share ideas about the tricks we are using to deal with the current economic problems. There will be no experts or lectures, just good conversation.

The theme for baby story time will be multi-faceted when the babies to age 24 months and their caregivers meet from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, June 8.

There will be stories, songs, bounces and action rhymes.

The event is free and no registration is required. Hastings Early Chilhood and Education is co-sponsoring the event.
