The Dakota County Sheriff's Office is investigating the possible drowning of a man in Lake Byllesby in southern Dakota County on Sunday.
According to Chief Deputy Sheriff Dave Bellows, the 80-year-old man was found floating in the water by two fishermen.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:42 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. The victim, a resident living on Lake Byllesby, was found near his pontoon boat and dock along the north shoreline. The fishermen brought the victim to the shore, called 9-1-1, and Dakota County Sheriff’s deputies responded.
The man was identified as Rupert Aloysious Schafer of Randolph Township. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation, but the preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning. The Dakota County Coroner’s office will ultimately confirm the cause of death after completing their investigation.
