The Dakota County Sheriff's Office has charged three people following the June 8, 2008, reported theft of a yellow Bombardier ATV from a residence on Lawrence Way in Hastings.
Ryan Scott Dohmen, 20, Hampton, and Kyle Edward Johnson, 20, Hastings have each been charged with one count of theft (aid and abet); and Jacob Daniel Barnes, 20, Hampton, has been charged with one count of receiving stolen property.
According to the criminal complaints filed in the Dakota County Attorney's office, a deputy took the initial theft report June 8. The ATV was valued at more than $1,000.
About a month later, the deputy was dispatched to the Barnes residence on the report by an individual that Barnes had gone to a vehicle parts store looking for specific parts for a Bombardier ATV. The deputy spoke to Barnes and his parents. While at the residence, the deputy observed the yellow ATV in a shed. The ATV did not have a vehicle registration number on it.
The deputy, after verifying the ownership documents, did give the ATV to the individual (who had contacted the deputy) who said the ATV was his. In a statement to the deputy, Barnes said he had received the ATV from Dohmen who had the ATV at Johnson's residence.
In talking to the deputy, Johnson said he did not know anything about the ATV.
In an interview with the deputy, Dohmen said he had been with Johnson and another individual, who has not been charged, in early June. Johnson and the other individual left with a truck, and returned about 45 minutes later with the ATV on the trailer. Dohmen said that when he gave the ATV to Barnes, he told him it was stolen.
In a second interview in December, Johnson admitted to stealing the ATV with Dohmen and the other individual.
