Clean-car bills expected soon

ST. PAUL – Minnesota lawmakers and environmentalists who want a bill limiting motor vehicle emissions applauded a Monday announcement by President Barack Obama that he will let states regulate such issues.

"I am glad he has opened the door for Minnesotans to adopt a vehicle emissions standard that will save Minnesota consumers more than $260 million by 2025,” said Rep. Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park.

Money would be saved, according to an Environment Minnesota analysis, by reduced gasoline costs.

“Clean vehicles mean real savings at the pump, cleaner air and significant cuts in the global warming pollution that threatens our rivers, lakes, streams and great outdoors,” Minnesota Environmental Partnership’s Molly Schultz said.

Lawmakers rejected clean car standards last year and continued car-maker opposition is expected this year.
