YMCA will celebrate national senior fitness day May 29

There are already a large number of older active adult Americans participating in the classes and activities at the Hastings Area YMCA. More are being invited to learn more about the YMCA, and the opportunity to do just that is next Wednesday, May 29.

As part of National Senior Health and Fitness Day, the Hastings Y, 85 Pleasant Drive, is holding an open house from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at its location. The day is free and open to the community.

"The Y holds Senior Health and Fitness Day every year on this day," said Hastings Y Active Older Adult Coordinator Amy Kohn. "We have always participated.

"The purpose is to expose the seniors who have not come in to come to see some of our offerings available for them. We already have a large population of older active people who take our classes."

Currently, about 25 different classes are available for that 55 and older age group. Part of the push is to attract the Baby Boomers, she said.

The open house will feature a number of vendors with information and demonstrations and it will introduce guests to different Y programs, said Kohn.

They include a pharmacist from Walgreens, who will check blood pressure readings and provide information. Lifestyle coach Deb Lyness will talk about decreasing the risk of diabetes. A representative from Allina Clinic will discuss colorectal cancer screening options.

Guests can also have an orientation to the equipment in the fitness room receive a free chair massage from Barb Odman, and learn more about the organic community garden right next door at Regina Medical Center. They can also learn to perform hands-on only CPR.

While the open house is the entire day, orientation to some of the available classes is from 8:10 a.m. to about noon. The classes include Active Older Adult Americans; Silver Sneaker Classic, Splash, and Circuit; Gold Bears Drum Alive; and Arthritis Water Exercise.

The first 50 people who come to the open house will receive free T-shirts. A member who brings a guest will receive two free guest passes.
