'Mary Poppins' continues this week

Body:

Mary Poppins is scheduled to fly into Hastings at the end of this month. Black Dirt Theater will present the musical "Mary Poppins" July 28-30 and Aug. 2-3, 5-6 in the Hastings High School auditorium.

Robin Starch, one of the founders of Black Dirt Theater, said that they will be able to fly Mary on stage.

"It's a technical enhancement that not all theaters can do, but because we have a fly system at our high school we are excited," Starch said.

"Mary Poppins" is a musical based on the book series of the same name by P.L. Travers. It is well known for the Disney film that was released in 1964 featuring Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins.

The musical is about the dysfunctional home of the Banks family. The children, Jane and Michael, have sent another nanny packing due to their misbehavior. Then the magical Mary Poppins flies in on the wind bringing a combination of magic, whimsy and discipline into their lives.

Audiences can expect high energy, quality singing and lots of dancing on stage, Starch said. The Hastings production is a combination of the movie and book series. There will be iconic songs like "Let's Go Fly a Kite" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," but there will be several unfamiliar songs that people may not know.

Performances will be July 28-29 at 7 p.m.; July 30 at 2 p.m.; Aug 2-3 and Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.; and Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the Hastings YMCA, by calling 651-300-9567 or by visiting www.blackdirttheater.com. The cost of tickets will be $15.
